Winter weather closes roads throughout Springwater Township

Springwater Township officials say motorists should avoid unnecessary travel and stay off the roads.

Motorists are being urged to stay off the roads in Springwater Township as a winter storm wallops parts of Simcoe County for a second day.

Springwater Township officials say motorists should stay off roads and avoid unnecessary travel.

“Travelling at this time places motorists, emergency responders, and public works crews at serious risk and significantly impacts snow removal and emergency response operations,” stated a release from the township issued Tuesday morning.

Residents are also being asked to remove garbage and recycling carts from sidewalks and roadways and place them well back from the travelled portion of the road, as the carts could be damaged or removed during snow removal operations and pose a safety hazard to equipment operators.

There are temporary road closures in effect in various locations — including a number of east-west roads west of Elmvale due to weather conditions and ongoing response efforts.

The Elmvale Community Centre has been opened as a warming centre for stranded motorists.

Both Springwater and Clearview townships have declared significant weather events in order to advise the public that it may take longer than usual to clear area roads.
