Trump darf Nationalgarde nicht nach Chicago schicken
Donald Trump wanted to deploy the National Guard in Chicago too. Yet the Supreme Court crippled their plans.
The US Supreme Court has rejected its emergency request. With this, Trump wanted to suspend the decision of a lower court, which had previously banned the deployment of soldiers in the state of Illinois and thus Chicago.
Typically in the United States, states have control over the National Guard, which is a military reserve unit and part of the US armed forces. The National Guard can be deployed for example in case of natural disasters, unrest or emergencies inside. In certain situations, the US president can take command – for example, when a rebellion against government authority threatens or is underway.
Since the summer, Trump has ordered the deployment of the National Guard in several cities such as Los Angeles, because there were protests against raids by the immigration authority ICE against immigrants.
The US President had repeatedly called Chicago a possible place - there were also protests against ICE raids. Trump called in hundreds of National Guardsmen to serve in the region in October, plus soldiers from Texas came to the state of Illinois, which is located in Chicago.
However, the state and the city council resisted against the deployment and went to court. A federal court in Chicago stopped the deployment of soldiers for the first time. The US government then turned to a court of appeals, but it also did not allow it to use the National Guard. That's why Trump was hoping for the Supreme Court.
